Contemporary Sculpture

Although I work with a variety of materials, I am most intrigued by stone.

Its natural beauty is unrivaled, each piece a unique combination of veining, marbling, color and lucency.

I enjoy the transformative challenge of taking a cold, hard, inanimate object and giving it life with personality, warmth and a softness that compels people to reach out and touch it.

Sometimes I begin with a preformed idea and a sketch, but in many cases I let the stone determine what it will become. Using a small clay model as a reference, I employ a wide range of methods to accomplish my vision, from traditional hammer and chisel, to an arsenal of power tools with cutting edge diamond technology.

My approach is often stylized, believing that “less is more” when working with stone to avoid distracting from its inherent beauty. The themes for my work are generally serene, inspired and informed by nature and my love for the outdoors, but with occasional influences from my time in Medicine as well.

Through meticulous design, smoothly polished contours and flowing lines, I aspire to create a visually pleasing and soothing experience for the viewer.

A Moment's Grace

Colorado Yule Marble/Mesabi Black Granite 72"L x 24"W x 20"H
This stylized rendering of a child in mother's arms was commissioned by Velinda Stevens, the late CEO of Kalispell Regional Medical Center, for display in the interior courtyard of the forthcoming Women and Children's Center.
It was carved from a 2 ton block of Colorado Yule Marble, originating from the same quarry that provided stone for the Lincoln Memorial and Tomb of the Unknowns in Washington D. C.
